MAAUN Organizes First Conference on Language Technology, Professionalism in English Teaching in Nigeria

The Department of General English, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), has organized a groundbreaking conference on English Language Teaching in Nigeria (CONELTIN) from 24th June to 25th June, 2024.

The two-day conference which focused on language technology and professionalism in English language teaching, attracted educators, researchers, and language enthusiasts from across the country and beyond.

Participants during the sessions delved into sharing experiences, best practices and insights from fields such as Applied Linguistics, Educational Technology, and Digital Literacies, fostering a culture of interactive knowledge exchange.

Speaking on the objectives of the CONELTIN, the Co-ordinator of the conference, Malam Abdulkabir Abdullahi said the conference was designed to bring together researchers, lecturers, teachers as well as students and practitioners that are passionate about the use of technology in teaching languages.

He noted that the workshop aimed to provide a supportive environment for individuals and collaborative researchers interested in exploring technology and language learning in today's rapidly evolving world.

Featuring over 30 research papers, the  conference showcased diverse topics such as The Prospects and Challenges of Employing Technology in Language Teaching and Learning in Nigeria; Freemium Digital Test Instruments; and Teacher Awareness and Utilization of Digital Approach in Teaching ESL Writing and Enhancing Phonics Instruction through Technology.

Other papers centered on encouraging interactive dialogue on leveraging technology in language classrooms, enhancing ESL writing through digital approaches, and addressing reading challenges in Nigerian primary schools.

The event emphasized the importance of upholding high standards in language education, where participants were encouraged to elevate their teaching methodologies and embrace innovative approaches.

The conference, co sponsored by Globus Bank, featured thought-provoking sessions, sparking insightful conversations and empowering participants to upgrade their professional competencies in teaching.

Earlier in his remarks, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, said the workshop would give participants full opportunity to explore the latest advancements and innovations in language technology, and how they are transforming  the way people live, work, and communicate. 

Management staff of MAAUN that graced the occasion included the Vice President of the University, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar, Vice President Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, Head of International Office, Engr. Bashir Garba, Dean of SMS, Dr. Mahmoud Said and Dr. Abdullahi Garba, among others.

Highlights of the event included a video presentation on who is a professional teacher of English by Silvana Richardson as well as displays of A-3 poster of journals without publication charges and A-3 poster of free digital tools.

The conference was brought to a close with an engaging photo session, capturing the excitement that filled the participants who attended the conference as they bade farewell to ane another.
