The Founder and Chairman Governing Council of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo has stressed the need for the Nigerian Police Academy Wudil, Kano State to make teaching of French language compulsory.
Prof. Gwarzo made the remark when the Commandant of the Academy, AIG Ahmad Abdulrahman visited the University located at Hotoro area in Kano on Tuesday, 13th December, 2022 .
He said there was urgent need for the Academy to make French language compulsory so that any policeman that finished from the academy would graduate as a bilingual.
"It is important for your students to be bilingual because you are training policemen that are going to protect not only Nigerian citizens but the whole of Africa.
"So, French language should be compulsory from 100 level to the end of the program so that they can graduate with a second language.
"Most of the positions Nigerians are losing internationally is because they cannot speak French as a second language, " he said.
Prof. Gwarzo, who is also the President of Maryam Abacha American University of Niger, expressed the readiness of the University to design a curriculum for the Academy to enable it start teaching French language.
According to him, policemen who graduate from the Academy as bilinguals have a greater opportunity of working in all the Francophone countries and even at United Nations (UN).
He, therefore, called on the Nigerian government to offer scholarships to policemen from other African countries as part of an effort to internationalize the Academy.
In his remarks, the Commandant of the Academy, AIG Ahmad Abdulrahman said the institution is ready to collaborate with MAAUN on mutually beneficial areas.
"Security is not a local business but a national business that requires international collaboration to achieve the desired objective, " he said.
He told Prof. Gwarzo that the Academy had established a Centre for French and Arabic studies but at rudimental stage as part of their commitment to internationalize the college.
The Commandant urged well-to-do individuals to emulate Prof. Gwarzo by establishing similar universities in the country to promote research training for the development of the country.
The AIG was accompanied during the visit by other principal officers.
