Kawo residents laud Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo for siting MAAUN in the area

As the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, prepare to commence academic activities, some residents of Kawo Nasarawa in Hotoro area where the university is located, have expressed gratitude to the Founder and Proprietor of the university, Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo. One of the residents of the area and an elder statesman, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Inuwa said the establishment of the university in the area has brought development to the area. According to him, the siting of the university in the area had not only led to the springing up of new structures in the area, but the development had also improved social and economic activities in the area.

"Universities are key institutions in processes of social change and development. The most important role they play is the production of highly skilled manpower and research output to meet perceived targets. "So, one cannot quantify the benefits of sitting this university around and within Kawo as the cost of landed properties has gone up in addition to the fact that small and medium scale businesses have started in the area. "It really pleases me and most people living in this area to see a university built by an indigene of the state.It will be an understatement to say that the institution has brought development to the area," he said. He reaffirmed the commitment of the residents to continue to support the Founder of the university for the success of the university.

Also speaking in the same vein, a traditional ruler in the area, Alhaji Kabiru Garba said the university had improved economic activities within the area and beyond. He noted that the university had also provided job opportunities to many unemployed persons and called on the Founder to provide more of such opportunities.

"We are calling on the Founder, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo to provide job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths such as cleaners, laborers and security guards based on individual's qualifications.," he said.

While appreciating Professor Abubakar Gwarzo for the gesture, the traditional ruler called on the Founder to rehabilitate the Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo road, which was named after him following the siting of the university in the area. He said the residents of the area would continue to appreciate professor Abubakar Gwarzo for citing the university in the area which had since brought development in the area. Meanwhile, a cross section of students of the university have expressed happiness over the location and facilities that have been put in place at the university. One of the students, Aminatu Jafaru Baba who spoke to newsmen after the commencement of activities in the university, said she was proud to have been admitted into the institution in view of what she saw in the school. According to her, the state of the art facilities put in place in the institution are comparable to any university across the world. "The hostels are okay and above all the school environment is very peaceful and conducive for learning,' she said.

Another female student, Fatima Salisu said she felt elated for getting admission into the institution because of what she saw in the school in terms of structures and facilities that have been provided by the Founder of the university, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo. According to Salisu, the school environment is also secured in view of the security measures that had been taken to ensure the safety of students and the entire university community .
